The challenge of storing radioactive materials
When the Nuclear Medicine Department of a PFI hospital needed a better, more secure way to handle out-of-hours deliveries of radioactive materials, they asked BriTec for a solution, knowing our reputation for customized shielding. The challenges around dispatching, receiving, and storing such packages risk triggering the hefty costs of PFI landlord fees, as well as posing risks to staff from ionising radiation because of improper storage.
The hospital outlined key criteria for this shielded storage, which included:
- A compartmentalised locker system for couriers to drop off or collect packages after hours.
- Built-in safeguards to prevent couriers from accessing the wrong deliveries or collections.
- A free-standing design with additional rear shielding.
A customized storage solution
With these in mind, BriTec was able to design and manufacture a tailored storage unit that complied with both the hospital team’s precise requirements as well as regulatory guidelines. The final unit included:
- Individually lockable compartments.
- Integrated trolley storage for larger consignments.
- A heavy rear shield for improved protection.
- A robust, free-standing frame for easy installation without modifications to the hospital building itself.
The hospital’s Nuclear Medicine Department now has a simple solution for its deliveries, strengthening its safety and improving its logistics.
